Rather than using animation to create short films, I am concerned with deconstructingconventional ideas about animation and digital technology. Combining drawing, animation, video and live performance, my work explores animism:
Thevital spark of movement that brings the still and lifeless into motion.
I am also interested in how the movements we make - our gestures and actions - leadus to construct our identity: in particular how we perform our gender identity. These interests have taken many forms including still drawings with animationsprojected over them or performances in which I become possessed by a cartooncharacter or channel digital doubles and raise electric spirits.
In my more recent work, I have been movingaway from working purely with computers and experimenting more with drawing, silhouettes and shadows. I am currently working on a series of drawings for theVenice Biennale, which combine sketches of city workers drawn onto pages fromthe Financial Times with cut-out silhouettes of myself performing actions ofdespair.
In the projects I do, I create work both asan individual practitioner and also in collaboration with other artists, performers and specialists. I enjoy working with others in interdisciplinarycollaborations and am always interested in challenging myself. For example, atthe moment, I am developing a series of workshops in Mindfulness through DrawnAnimation in conjunction with artists, meditation instructors andeducationalists.
